Alumni Stories
Kindra’s journey from her family farm in Cambridge, Illinois, to national champion teams and award-winning teaching is a testament to the lifelong impact of Black Hawk College East Campus. An inspiring story about how her passion for agriculture and education continues to shape the next generation.
Kindra Callahan grew up in Cambridge, Illinois, on a small family farm where she helped raise livestock, worked on grain production, detasseled, baled hay, and showed horses. From an early age, Kindra developed a passion for evaluating live animals—an interest she nurtured through FFA and continued throughout her education.
At Black Hawk College East Campus, Kindra’s love for livestock and judging flourished. She competed on the 2005 National Champion Horse Judging Team, served as student trustee on the Board of Trustees, and was vice president of the Agri-Business Club.
In 2006, Kindra earned her Associate of Science in agriculture and was named the Outstanding Agriculture Student. She transferred to Kansas State University, where she competed with the 2007 AQHA World Champion Team and coached the 2008 AQHA Reserve World Champion Horse Judging Team.
After college, Kindra joined Land O’Lakes Purina as a lifestyle species specialist in the upper Midwest, serving the nutritional needs of cow/calf operations, horse farms, large sporting dog kennels, zoos, and club livestock producers. She later became an agriculture education teacher and FFA advisor in the Kewanee Community School District, teaching classes ranging from Introduction to Agriculture and Animal Science to dual-credit courses in Horticulture and Veterinary Technology through Black Hawk College East Campus.
Kindra holds three Curriculum for Agriculture Science Educators (CASE) certifications in agriculture fiber and natural resources, agriculture business management, and agriculture power and technology.
In 2020, Kindra became a CASE lead teacher, traveling nationwide in the summers to provide professional development to other agriculture teachers. Her dedication has earned her statewide recognition: she was named a Top 5 Agriculture Educator in Illinois (District 1 Golden Owl) in 2021, the Illinois State Winner of the Teacher Turn the Key Award in 2022, and saw her Kewanee FFA Chapter recognized as a National Finalist for the National Chapter Award the same year.
Since returning to Kewanee, Kindra has served as a board member for the Black Hawk College East Ag Alumni and represented the Ag Alumni on the Black Hawk College East Foundation board. She actively assists her husband, Aaron Callahan, in developing the freshman horse judging team at East Campus. Kindra also serves on the Instructional Leadership Team at KHS, volunteers at East Campus, judges horse shows, represents Section 3 on the Illinois Ag Education Legislative Committee, and mentors young people through various channels.
Outside of her professional and volunteer commitments, Kindra enjoys reading, learning new skills (like breakaway roping), traveling with her husband, spending time with family and their dogs, and—her favorite—attending a team roping.
